Utilities

Energy Management provides the essential utilities that keep campus running—steam, electricity, chilled water, potable water, and sewer services. Through an extensive network of underground systems and the efficient operation of the campus power plant, the team ensures reliable, sustainable service to all university buildings.

Underground Piping

Steam

The Combined Cooling and Heating Power plant (CCHP) produces and delivers over 1.1 billion pounds of steam annually to the MU campus.  Over 26 miles of underground piping delivers steam to campus buildings for HVAC, hot water, humidification, and powering process loads.

Electricity

Electricity

The University campus utilizes over 220,000 MWH of electricity each year.  Over 80% is generated by the CCHP plant, with the remainder coming from the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) electric grid.  Over 59 circuit miles of underground electric cables provide electricity to campus buildings.

East Campus Chiller Plant

Chilled Water

Keeping the campus cool requires over 36,000 tons of cooling equipment delivering 70 million ton hours of 45 °F water to campus buildings for HVAC cooling.  This chilled water travels through 24 miles of underground piping systems throughout the campus.

Well

Potable Water

The MU campus uses nearly 460 million gallons of water annually.  Water is pumped from any of 5 deep wells, chlorinated, and supplied to the campus through 30 miles of water distribution piping. Energy Management staff are State certified for the delivery of drinking water.  Water usage has decreased 67% per gross square foot of building space since 1990.

Sanitary & Storm Sewers

Energy Management maintains close to 20 miles of sanitary piping systems, and over 37 miles of storm water conveyance systems across the campus.
