The University of Missouri is home to iconic campus features that reflect its history, pride, and traditions. From banners on campus to lighting the Jesse Hall dome, these guidelines help preserve the integrity of our most cherished landmarks.
Questions about these guidelines should be directed to Campus Facilities via email at mucffacilityops@missouri.edu.

Banners & Signage
Campus signage and banners help showcase Mizzou pride while maintaining a consistent university brand. Guidelines cover usage on light poles, buildings, and The Columns.

Jesse Hall
Dome
Jesse Hall’s dome is typically lit white but can shine gold to mark special campus events or achievements. A formal request process ensures lighting reflects meaningful milestones. The dome is not accessible to the public but can be explored online.

Memorial Union Tower
The Memorial Clock Tower plays the Mizzou Fight Song on the hour. The university is unable to allow anyone inside the top of Memorial Union Tower besides those who maintain it. Fortunately, Campus Facilities partnered with Show Me Mizzou to provide a tour of the outside of the tower via photography.

Switzler
Hall Bell
Built in 1871, Switzler Hall is the oldest classroom building on campus. The bell in its tower once signaled the beginning and end of class periods. Now, the bell rings only to commemorate special traditions, such as the 1839 Reveal, Tap Day and MU Remembers.

Monuments
Naming landmarks or placing monuments on campus requires formal review and approval. Guidelines ensure all designations align with university values and public image. Final approval is granted by the UM Board of Curators after full campus review.

Chalking &
Sidewalk Decals
The university’s chalking policy outlines where chalking is permissible so that university property, equipment and facilities are protected and maintained. Sidewalk decals may be placed with the approval of MarCom. If decals are damaged, they may be removed to prevent tripping hazards. For installation of sidewalk decals, submit a work order to the Mizzou Sign Shop.

Flags
The University follows the flag policies of the state of Missouri and receives federal and state flag notifications from the Missouri Office of Administration.

Fountains
No colored dyes shall be added to the fountains at Tiger Plaza or Arts & Science Mall.
