Sustainable Buildings

The University of Missouri has incorporated sustainability principles into its design guidelines. These include:

  • Evaluating the effects of building orientation and materials on energy use.
  • Preserving trees and riparian corridors when possible.
  • Reducing stormwater runoff and improving the quality of unavoidable runoff.
  • Integrating topography with design.
  • Considering of on-site renewable energy.

In some cases of new construction or renovation, the university pursues certification through the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) framework, which is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council.

NextGen Precision Health building
The NextGen Precision Health building, completed in 2021, earned LEED Silver certification. Some of its sustainable features include LED lighting, efficient HVAC systems, smart building controls, native and adaptive plant species, and outdoor space for social activities.
